Dates to keep in mind
THE GOLF OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP 17th-20th July 2008
01334 460000
The course this year has had a few changes, rather than lengthening the course, the course has been tightened, at 7,173 yards the course will be played at just 155 yards longer than it did in 1988. Mr Dawson believes this will be a fitting challenge for the worlds best golfers and assuringly quoted 'Believe me, this is long enough'
I intend to agree, with twenty new bunkers (16 fairside and 4 greenside), the significant mounding that has been added to seven of the greens, calling for a greater variety of imaginative recovery shots. changes to the lines of play on five holes: 3, 9, 11, 16 and 17. The greatest of these changes come into play on the 9th and 17th holes: the 9th fairway has been moved 25 yards to the left; and the par-5 17th has an entirely new green, which is both 25 yards further back and raised above the fairway to create a more challenging approach shot, particularily for those who want to get home in 2.

SOUTHPORT FLOWERSHOW
21ST AUGUST - 24TH AUGUST
In the 79th year of the Southport flowershow, located in 34 areas of the beautiful Victoria Park, it is one of the largest, most diverse shows in the country.
Started in 1924 by the local council, and now privatised since 1986 and managed by The Southport Flowershow company, since the council could no longer afford to keep it running.
The Southport Flower show company is group of local businesses and gardeners which then rescued the show, within five years the attendance topped 100,00 visitors, and the show was given extra security when Sefton Council granted the company a 60 year lease on the 34 acre site in 1994 for a token rent of one bouquet, which is given to the mayor/mayoress of Sefton on the first day of opening of the show.
Since then the company have invested millions of pounds of renovations and maintenance of Victoria Park.
The Queen Mother was the patroness from 1935 - 1952 and Lady Pilkington was also a patron for a number of years.
By the outbreak of worldwar II the show had blossomed into the greatest flowershow in the world, then, unfortunatley due to the war had to be suspended for the 'dig for victory' war effort.
The highest attendeance was in 1961 when 131,000 guests attended.
Every year we are visited by celebtities from all areas show business, sports to open the show (this years to be confirmed).
With lots of different competitions and shows there is something for everyone, or just a great day out to have a look round, relax and get a lot of ideas from.
Look out for the bargains when selling the plants, could have a dream garden of your own.

THE SHIP INN BARDSEA, THE LAKES
01229 869329
This charming little bed and breakfast is a lovely place to get away from it all, when I say all, I mean the kids as well, as 'The Ship Inn' does not accomodate for under twelve year olds. This being because it is a place of tranquility and rest.
The rooms are very homely with fresh cut flowers, king size beds en-suite bathrooms and cottage style decor.
The food is all home made with fresh local produce (the home-made steak pie, trifle and fresh strawberry pavalova is to die for), which is well accompanied by the many tradionally served pumped ales, selection of wines and liquors, finished with freshly roasted coffee.
The Ship Inn is a few minutes stroll through the gorgeous views to the beach.
And should you wish a day on a boat on the lakes or a nice day visiting the shops, there is a little bus that passes.
There is a need to book well in advance to visit this secret, but well visited inn, as the inn is very popular with established regulars from all over England.

THE CASARTELLI
16-20 Hanover Street, Liverpool
0844 800 2955
New luxury appartments opened in Liverpool, and I must say, when my husband and I stayed there for the night, we was amazed.
We was greated in the nicest way by Laura, the manager of The Casartelli, who led us to the secured private parking, then up to our amazing apartment.
We was advised on some lovely places to eat all within two minutes of the appartment, and with the central of Liverpool only two minutes away, the night was ours.
The appartment was mainly marble, and the decor was fabulous, 2 bedrooms, large hall, lounge with fitted kitchen and super power shower, everything you need for self catering if desired, although I had no intention of cooking or anything, as I had already made my mind up we was dining out, in the end I would not have cared if we just stayed in.
After a few drinks and a meal, we headed back to The Casartelli with a nice bottle of wine and tried to decide which bedroom to stay in as both looked so comfy.
The Casartelli is a high class luxury appartment and if you are looking for that special place for a night, weekend away or even to stay for a while, this is highly recommended.
Thank-you Laura. You will be seeing us again and again and again.
